Telenor Norway said that a Big Data analysis of anonymised information on its network has enabled Tromso’s tourism sector to establish that the greatest number of visitors to the city are from the UK. The information should help the hospitality sector to plan its business. From 15 February until 15 April, people of 84 nationalities visited Tromso, according to network usage data presented at the winter holiday conference Snow 17 on 10 and 11 May.

After the UK, the most tourists came from Germany, with Lithuania in third place, Russia fourth and Spain fifth. Poland was in sixth place for visitor numbers to Tromso, followed by Estonia in seventh place, the Netherlands in eighth, Latvians ninth and Swiss people, tenth. There is also a large number of Swedes working in the city.

The data also show that Norwegians travel in to Tromso by day and then go home in the evening, whereas tourists do the opposite. Similar analyses have been carried out in the winter sports resort of Geiranger, too.
