Telenor Sweden criticises prosecutors' data retention stance

Thursday 5 January 2017 | 11:56 CET | News
Telenor Sweden said it has held talks with district prosecutors who had criticised its decision to stop retaining customer data. It stopped doing so after the European Court of Justice ruled in a case brought by Tele2 Sweden that member states may not impose a general obligation to retain data on providers of electronic communications services. Telenor said it became clear in those talks that the prosecutor had not understood the fact that the operator could not voluntarily decide to continue data retention for law enforcement purposes without valid legislation to back it up.
