Telenor, Telia win 1,800 MHz band auction in Norway
Telenor and TeliaSonera have won the 1,800 MHz band spectrum up for auction in Norway, after seven days of bidding. The regulator Nkom sold the three blocks of frequencies remaining from the 4G auction in 2013. Ice Norway also participated in the latest bidding, but did not acquire spectrum. 

Telenor will pay NOK 585.3 million (EUR 63.1 million) for 2x10 MHz. The operator said it will use the extra spectrum to increase speed and capacity on its 4G network. TeliaSonera Norway, which operates under the brand Netcom, will pay NOK 292.7 million for 2x5 MHz. Netcom already covers 95 percent of the population with 4G and will use the additional spectrum to upgrade speeds and capacity. The winning bidders will have until 20 January to negotiate their places in the band.

Telenor Norway wins 1800 MHz placement round

Norwegian electronic communications regulator Nkom said the allocation of frequencies in the 1800 MHz band is complete, following the recent auction. Telenor Norway had won 2 x 10 MHz and TeliaSonera had won 2 x 5 MHz in the first stage, and the matter then progressed to sealed bids. Telenor submitted the highest bid, of NOK 10 million plus NOK 100 kroner. It did not say how much TeliaSonera had bid.

The Norwegian electronic communication regulator Nkom said that Telenor Norge and TeliaSonera Norge failed to reach an agreement by the 20 January deadline regarding frequencies in the 1,800 MHz band. It said Telenor Norway had won 2 x 10 MHz in the recent auction and TeliaSonera had won 2 x 5 MHz. The matter now progresses to another stage involving sealed bids, and the deadline for submission is 28 January.

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom is putting its recommendations for the award of spectrum in 880-915 MHz and 925-960 MHz frequencies out to consultation. The deadline for comments is 26 February. The final rules should be published in mid-April.

Ice.net plans to expand its customer base significantly now that its new LTE network is operational, CEO Eivind Helgaker said in an interview with Digi.no. The company started up as a provider of wireless internet services and it already had about 100,000 customers before taking over about 90,000 from Network Norway, but now plans to develop a voice network.

TeliaSonera Norway says Christmas Eve texts rise 17%

TeliaSonera said its Norwegian customers sent 11.87 million SMS on Christmas Eve as well as 490,800 MMS. The increase in SMS was 17 percent compared with last year and the number of MMS fell 16 percent. The figures cover NetCom, OneCall, Chess and MyCall, for the whole of 24 December from 00:00 hrs, and until 06:00 hrs the next day (Christmas Day).

Nkom invites 1800 MHz auction bids by 16 November

Norwegian electronic communications regulator Nkom said it has made changes to the rules for auction of 1800 MHz frequencies, which will begin on 25 November. Interested parties should register by 16 November. The award of the frequencies will be conducted in two stages. The first is to determine the amount of spectrum to be assigned to each winner (the allocation stage). The second is to determine the specific frequencies assigned to each winner (the assignment stage).

Nkom lets 1800 MHz auction winners negotiate assignment

Norwegian communications regulator Nkom said that it is holding a consultation on a proposed change to the auction of frequencies in the 1800 MHz band. Following a request from TeliaSonera in August to change the auction rules, the Ministry of Transport and Communication has asked Nkom to devise rules for an assignment stage, which will replace Section 10.4 of the auction rules set out on 15 July 2015. During the assignment stage, the auction winners will have at least four weeks to negotiate the assignment
