Telia allows free use of social networks

Telia said it is the first operator in Sweden and indeed the world to provide its customers with free use of social media. It said they can now surf as much as they like on popular networks Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, Twitter and Kik, without using their mobile internet allowance. The new facility comes in on 18 April.

The Swedish Internet Foundation IIS questioned whether such a move was good for internet neutrality, adding that journalist, commentator and radio presenter Emanuel Karlsten had called the decision a ”stab in the back’ for network neutrality.

Swedish postal and telecoms regulator PTS said it is giving Telia Company 30 days to comply with its December directive to treat all internet traffic equally once customers have used up their allowance, in line with European Union regulations. Telia Company has criticised Swedish postal and telecoms regulator PTS' demand that it should stop providing zero-rated social media access, saying this would make it harder for 1 million customers to communicate. It said Swedes use social networks on their phones daily to maintain contact with family and friends. The watchdog's decision limits market choice, too, it claimed.

Swedish postal and telecoms regulator PTS said it will issue an injunction ordering Telia Company to comply with rules on zero-rated internet traffic. PTS said that under EU regulations, all web traffic must be treated equally, once consumers have used up all the data included in their subscription.

Facebook remains the most popular social network in Sweden among people under the age of 16. So said Swedish internet foundation ahead of its report 'The Swedes and Social Media 2016', which is due out on 10 November. Meanwhile, Twitter is losing users, it said.

Telia Sweden takes part in Stockholm Pride 2016

Telia Sweden said it will be giving it rainbow versions of its 'Hating hate' T-shirts at Stockholm Pride festival from 25 to 31 July. It said it had already given out 25,000 #hatahat shirts since it began its campaign against online trolling in spring. Representatives of the operator will be cycling around during the LGBTQ rights event, handing out the garments.

Average Swedish mobile data speed rises 20% to 24 Mbps

Swedish internet foundation IIS said a report from its broadband speed checker, Bredbandskollen, puts the average mobile internet speed nationwide at 23.7 Mbps, up by 20 percent this year. The speed has risen ten times over six years, it said. Differences remain between locations, it added.

IIS launches free Datahotell for public bodies to share data

Swedish internet foundation IIS said it has cooperated with the company MetaSolutions to enable anyone to store data free of charge, though the website datahotell.se. It is chiefly aimed at public organisations. It said Sweden has been falling behind in recent years in the digitisation of society in general, and when it comes to open data in particular.

Nkom holds internet neutrality forum on 13 June

Nkom said it is holding a National Net Neutrality Forum at Felix Conference Centre in Oslo from 10:00 hrs to 13:00 hrs on 13 June. It is timed to follow BEREC's publication on 06 June of its recommendations for European guidelines on internet neutrality. BEREC will have a six-week consultation period so the Norwegian conference will address the relevant issues.

PTS probes Telia and 3 Sweden over zero-rated services

Swedish postal and telecoms regulator PTS said it has begun looking into zero-rated internet services from Telia and 3 Sweden. This is partly because of new European Union rules on network neutrality. PTS said it is not expressly forbidden to provide services such as music or social media without deducting the data used from the kitty in the customer's subscription.

Swedish media leaders protest at Telia's Facebook deal

The Swedish press has published an open letter signed by 27 media managers, protesting at Telia's decision to allow its Swedish subscribers access to social networks at no charge. According to website idg.se, postal and telecoms regulator PTS has decided to investigate, after a record 300 complaints against this potential breach of the principle of network neutrality.

Half of Swedes use Facebook as a news source

Facebook is increasingly popular as a news source in Sweden, according to consultancy Mediavision. During the year's first quarter, 49 percent of Swedes aged 15 to 74 said that they read news via Facebook during an average day. This makes Facebook one of the biggest platforms for news in terms of daily reach. Only the leading evening news paper, Aftonbladet, reaches a similar level.

Telia joins Urban ICT Arena and Drive Sweden schemes

Telia has announced at Kista Mobility Week from 25-29 April that it is joining the smart city initiatives Urban ICT Arena and Drive Sweden. It will supply the expertise and infrastructure needed for services such as public transport and autopiloted cars. Urban ICT Arena is an open testbed and co-creation arena in Kista where digitisation can be developed, tested and displayed in an urban environment, furthering the development of the Stockholm Region and Kista Science City.

Telia Sweden lifts Q1 EBITDA, sales dip on corporate woes

Telia said net sales in Sweden decreased by 2.4 percent in the first quarter to SEK 8.835 billion from SEK 9.050 billion a year earlier, but said it had a better sales mix and lower costs. Service revenues, excluding acquisitions and disposals, went down by 0.8 percent to SEK 7.745 billion from the same quarter of 2015. Consumer revenue continued to grow but corporate turnover came under competitive pressure.
