Telia leases fibre capacity from BKK and Broadnet to cut Telenor dependency

Friday 12 January 2018 | 13:19 CET | News

Telia Norway has signed a fibre agreement with BKK Digitek in Bergen and Broadnet in Ostfold, according to an article on the portal TelecomRevy.no. The deal gives Telia better control of its own network and helps to pave the way for 5G, freeing Telia further from Telenors fibre grid. BKK is the largest energy producer in western Norway with an emphasis on green electricity.

The new deals supplement the one that Telia signed with Broadnet in spring 2016 for the Oslo area and core national networks to boost grid quality and capacity as well as reduce mobile network vulnerabilities.

At that time, technical director Dag Wigum said Telia would look at opportunities to expand the arrangement to other parts of the country. Shortly after, Telia signed a similar agreement with Eidsiva Bredband in Hedmark, Oppland and Ovre Romerike.

Wigum now says that Telia has taken the next step in making its mobile infrastructure more robust. The deal with BKK provides it with leading infrastructure in western Norway, and the one with Broadnet expands its agreement to cover Oppland, and parts of Akershus, Ski and Follo. Taken together, the deals with BKK and Broadnet will improve Telia’s customer service, meeting the needs of the future, he said.
