Telia loses Discovery channels, offers C More as replacement

Telia has lost the Discovery channels across its Nordic footprint, after the operator was unable to reach a new distribution deal with Discovery. The Disovery, Eurosport, Animal Planet and other channels owner by the group were removed from Telia's TV services in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden from 03 March after the previous contract with Discovery expired. 

Telia said on its Swedish website that it was still in talks with Discovery with the hope of reaching a new deal. The company said Discovery made unacceptable demands in their previous negotiations, that would have forced Telia customers to pay for channels they may not want. 

While the talks continue, Telia is offering customers alternative content from its premium C More channel range to make up for the loss of the Discovery channels.

Telia had offered a commitment to license out those rights to one other market player in the two countries last November, in order to secure the commission's approval for Telia's acquisition of the Bonnier Broadcasting companies TV4, C More and MTV.

TDC says Q1 EBITDA in line with FY outlook, Discovery contract expiry hits TV subscriptions

Danish operator TDC has reported a 4.1 percent drop in first quarter revenue and a 2 percent decline in EBITDA. It lost 61,000 TV subscribers as the expiry of its YouSee arm's contract with Discovery led to many cancellations, with a knock-on effect on other subscriptions. While the coronavirus causes uncertainty, it had little influence on Q1 so the company is waiting until the end of Q2 to look at its FY guidance.

Telia Sweden starts offering streaming service Telia Play on standalone basis

Telia Company said it is making its Swedish streaming service Telia Play available as a standalone service that is accessible to anyone. It combines fifteen linear channels with streaming, and output includes films and serials from Discovery, HBO Nordic and C More for SEK 199 per month. The operator is offering a promotional free month's trial and one free film rental.

More and more Swedish subscribers are sharing video services with other households, according to consultancy Mediavision. It said the number of Netflix subscribers in Sweden in the first quarter of 2020 was more or less unchanged at 2.1 million. Stacking is increasing, too, but the coronavirus lockdown could cause an end to the current plateau in the market.

Telia Norway has reported lower year-on-year net sales and service revenues in the first quarter of 2020 along with the loss during the quarter of 3,000 mobile customers and 3,000 TV subscribers, but the operator gained some 6,000 fixed broadband customers since Q4.

Discovery appoints O'Neil as commercial director for Africa

Discovery has announced it has appointed Clare O'Neil as commercial director for Africa to support commercial growth of its television brands there. O'Neil has over 30 years of experience in the media and broadcasting industries, having started her career at the Argus Group and going on to hold positions at M-Net, e.TV and SABC. She was also a non-executive director on the SABC board and was chief executive officer at the Broadcast Research Council (BRC) from 2015 to 2018.

Telia Company has reached an agreement with Discovery to restore access to its channels for customers in the Nordic region. Eventually, Telia will also be offering Discovery's streaming service, Dplay.

Get aims to resolve channel distribution dispute with Discovery

Telia Norway said the Discovery has broken off channel distribution talks with its Get am and in the meantime, Get customers are unable to watch Discovery. Telia said Discovery wanted Get viewers to pay more for material of little interest and also wants to split up its output in a way that would force viewers to pay for several subscription services in order to be able to keep watching their favourite shows.

Amazon, Discovery named likely bidders for Nordic rights to Premier League

The English men's football Premier League has invited bids for Nordic broadcasting rights for the 2022/23 season and onwards by 29 January, and Swedish consultancy Mediavision speculated that Amazon or Discovery might bid for these. Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT) is the current rights holder of the Premier League in Denmark, Finland and Sweden.

Telia returns Discovery channels in Sweden, Finland, Denmark

Telia Company said it would be restoring Discovery channels to its line-ups in Denmark, Sweden and Finland on the evening of 09 June following a carriage agreement. Negotiations had been difficult, said Telia. Its Danish press release said there would be no price changes. The service had been withdrawn on 08 June.

Telia announced that it will drop the Dicsovery channels in Sweden and Finland after failing to each a new distribution agreement with the broadcaster.
