Telia Norway has selected Ericsson as its sole 5G radio access network (RAN) vendor. It will deploy hardware and software from Ericsson Radio System, including 5G New Radio (5G NR). Ericsson will also modernise Telia Norway’s entire radio network, including deployment of Ericsson Spectrum Sharing software so that Telia can split its spectrum between 4G and 5G use.
Telia Company obtained access to 2x10 MHz in the 700 MHz band in June 2019, which will be a key enabler for roll-out of 5G in Norway, it said. The band will become available from on 01 November this year. Both parties expect 5G roll-out to begin in 2020, and that the first 5G commercial services will be available next year, too. Ericsson and Telia Norway aim to provide nationwide 5G coverage by the end of 2023.
Telia Norway plans to use 5G to enhance broadband and support the Internet of Things (IoT) for applications in homes, industry and smart cities. Telia Norway and Ericsson are already running a 5G pilot network in Trondheim for smart transport, automation and artificial intelligence (AI).
