Telia Sweden said that it is continuing with the Pilot for Industrial Mobile Communication in Mining (PIMM) alongside Atlas Copco, ABB, Boliden, Ericsson, InfoVista, Volvo Construction Equipment, Wolfit, RISE and Lulea Technical University (LTU). The pilot has succeeded in using mobile communications to automate and control some operations at Boliden’s mine remotely. The next stage involves enabling mine operators, maintenance staff, equipment and machinery from different providers to connect and share data with one another.

Telia said that under what it calls the Digitalised Mining Arena (DMA) project, it will work with Ericsson and InfoVista to develop and optimise the mine’s network and test equipment there that can be used with 5G.

Meanwhile, ABB will create products to connect mine operations and personnel to process data from the 800xA production system via mobile communications. Atlas Copco and Volve CE will link their own vehicles and products to the mobile grid.
