Thai 3G auction attracts 8 bidders

Eight companies are considering participating in Thailand's upcoming 3G auction. Eight companies have bought bid documents for the 3G licence auction scheduled for 28 and 29 September, the Bangkok Post reports. No foreign companies have acquired bid documents, but two parties will have Asian telecommunications firms as strategic partners. Loxley is in talks with an Asian company and may set-up a subsidiary to bid for the 3G licence while Samart is considering a joint venture with Asian mobile operator group Axiata. The applicants are Advanced Info Service (AIS) and its subsidiary AWN, DTAC and its subsidiary DTAC Internet Service, TrueMove and SK Wireless (a subsidiary of parent True), Samart I-Mobile, and Loxley. The latter two already provide 3G services as MVNOs via TOT's 3G network in Bangkok. The mobile operators will only be allowed to bid with one entity so five companies are expected to participate in the auction. Bid documents will be available until 29 August and participants must submit their proposals by 30 August. Jasmine International, the parent company of fixed-line provider TT&T, has also said it is interested in 3G services.
