Thailand to auction 5G spectrum in February 2020
Thailand’s National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) plans to complete its auction for 56 licences for 5G spectrum in early 2020. The regulator aims to grant 5G licences in February, so that auction winners can start the network rollout in March 2020. Thailand will auction multiple spectrum bands at the same time, including the remaining 700MHz and 1800MHz bandwidths, as well as the 2,600MHz and 26GHz, local newspaper The Nation reports, citing NBTC secretary-general Takorn Tantasith. The NBTC will cap the 26GHz spectrum auction at 1,200MHz bandwidth per bidder, while the 2,600MHz will be capped at 100MHz bandwidth per bidder.

The NBTC will auction off a total of 15MHz bandwidth of the 700MHz spectrum, which will be divided into three licences of 5MHz bandwidth each. The NBTC will also auction 35MHz of bandwidth in the 1,800MHz spectrum, split into seven licences of 5MHz each.

The starting price for the 700MHz licence has been set at THB 17.58 billion. The 1,800MHz licences will be auctioned for around THB 12.5 billion each.

The NBTC will also auction the 190MHz bandwidth of the 2,600MHz, which will be split into 19 licences of 10MHz bandwidth each. The 2,700MHz bandwidth in the 26GHz spectrum band will be divided into 27 licences of 100MHz each. Takorn also announced that the NBTC will release details related to the starting price of the 2,600MHz and the 26GHz spectrum bands on 30 October. 

The NBTC plans to submit the auction timeframes and other details to the telecom subcommittee on 6 November, and invite bidders to participate in the auction by 20 December this year.

Thai operator Total Access Communication (dtac) has announced it has added 21,146 cell sites over the 12 ended June 2019. According to data from Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), dtac added 10,040 new cell sites in 2017, and 9,411 sites in 2018. Dtac also reports that internet traffic has reached 400-500 MB per customer per day.

The Thai government plans to merge state-owned operators TOT and CAT Telecom into a single entity called National Telecom (NT). The planned merger would take place in November. National Telecom is expected to begin operations by year-end, Bangkok Post reports, citing the country's minister of Digital Economy and Society. The merger has already been approved by the State Enterprise Policy Commission (Sepo).

AIS, Dtac, True acquire 700MHz spectrum licenses in Thailand

Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) has awarded 700MHz spectrum licenses to mobile operators AIS, Dtac and True. The NBTC auctioned three spectrum blocks in the 700MHz frequency band at a price of THB 17.58 billion each (VAT excluded). Each slot includes 10MHz of bandwidth. The licence is valid for 15 years with payments to be made in 10 instalments.

Dtac to conduct lab, live testing of 5G use cases with TOT and CAT

Thai operator Dtac has launched 5G testbeds at both Chulalongkorn University, in downtown Bangkok, and Kasetsart University's Sriracha Campus in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). The purpose is to test 5G use cases in collaboration with TOT and CAT, sharing resources and knowledge throughout the process. Testing equipment will also be provided by Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia.

Dtac TriNet receives 900 MHz, 1800 MHz licenses in Thailand

Thai operator dtac TriNet has announced it has received spectrum licenses for the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz bands from the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC). Dtac won the licenses for 1800 MHz and 900 MHz in auctions held by the NBTC in August and October, respectively. Dtac curently holds a spectrum portfolio of 110 MHz bandwidth with 70 MHz used for downlink.
