Thailand's AIS first to demo 5G using 26GHz 

Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) launched its 5G demonstration testing on the 26GHz spectrum on 22 November after receiving the green light from the telecom regulator, according to local paper Bangkokpost citing AIS's chief corporate officer Weerawat Kiattipongthaworn. AIS's 5G demo tests were set up at a booth at Emporium, in collaboration with telecom equipment maker Nokia. Rival mobile operator TrueMove, through subsidiary TrueMove H, plans to launch its 5G demo tests on the 28GHz range at Iconsiam in December with partner Huawei.

On 22 November, the board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) officially approved AIS's and TrueMove's proposals to test 5G from 22 November to 15 December.

The permit for 5G testing is just the first round of testing. Operators can request an extension from the NBTC for the length of the testing period. Operators must report their results to the NBTC after they conduct their testing.

The 5G demo tests will allow people and companies to experience the new technology for the first time in Thailand at "5G the First Live in Thailand by AIS", a free event taking place at Emporium. AIS' testing will cover several scenarios: 5G super-speed, 5G ultra-low latency with cooperative cloud robot, 5G for Industry 4.0, 5G virtual reality and 5G Fifa virtual reality.

Thailand mobile operator AIS announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the vendors Nokia, Huawei and ZTE to work on 5G research. The companies will participate in research and tests of 5G technology to develop use cases for industry and consumers as well as educate staff on the new generation of mobile networks.

Dtac picks Nokia to deploy commercial 4G TDD network in Thailand

Nokia and Thai mobile operator Total Access Communication (Dtac) have deployed a commercial 4G TDD network in Thailand. Once completed, dtac Turbo users on the 2300 MHz spectrum operated in cooperation with TOT will have access to upgraded mobile broadband speeds. The network is being deployed in the Northeast, North and South of Thailand, including major provinces such as Khon Kaen, Chiang Mai, and Phuket.

AIS launches LAA update for smartphones from Samsung, Sony

Today, AIS has introduced its smartphone that supports LAA on the 4.5G network. The LAA-enabled smartphones include the Samsung Galaxy S9, Samsung Galaxy S9+, and Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium. Data on these LAA smartphones is two times faster and downloads 30 percent faster than on the 4G network, AIS said. Serviceable areas for the 4.5G network includes Bangkok, key cities, and areas with high data usage such as Siam Center and The Mall Korat.

AIS to offer 700 Mbps speeds for Samsung Galaxy S8 users

Thai mobile operator Advanced Info Service (AIS) has announced it will provide data speeds of up to 700 Mbps on its 4.5G network for customers who will purchase the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus from AIS. The 700 Mbps speeds on AIS' 4.5G network will be enabled by MIMO 4x4 with CA technology and 256 QAM, starting May.

Ericsson performed the first live 5G demonstration in Thailand using its 5G test bed and 5G ready core as part of a three-day technology showcase marking Ericsson Thailand's 111 years in the country.
