TNO launches standalone 5G test network

Tuesday 30 June 2020 | 09:29 CET | News

The Dutch applied research institute TNO has launched a complete 5G network. TNO said the network offers more possibilities than the current commercial 5G networks, allowing it to try out innovative new applications with the telecom sector and vertical industries.

This may include services such as AR/VR, high-speed video connections, self-driving cars and industrial drones. The network is based on an official test licence for the 3.5 GHz band and includes 5G radios with a cloud-native open 5G core network.

The 5G core is based on Fraunhofer's Open5GCore, running on TNO's cloud platform in Kubernetes orchestrated containers. The radio network uses base stations from Ericsson to deliver a standalone 5G experience throughout the network.

TNO said the network can be set up quickly anywhere in the country, while access to the source code provides quick integration with existing applications. New functionalities will be added continuously based on demand from partners. Case studies are already planned with the healthcare sector, media companies, industry and mobility applications.
