Trump proposes NTIA official Simington as new FCC commissioner

Wednesday 16 September 2020 | 09:33 CET | News

US President Donald Trump has nominated Nathan Simington to be a member of the Federal Communications Commission, according to a White House statement. He would replace Mike O'Rielly, whose term has not been extended

Simington is a senior adviser at the National Telecommunications and Information Administration and prior to that worked as senior counsel at mobile distributor Brightstar.

According to The Verge, he played a role in helping draft the administration's recent order calling for greater regulation of social media and online platforms. O'Rielly's appointment to a third term was reportedly revoked after he criticised the plans to have the FCC regulate social media.

The new commissioner must still be approved by the Senate before taking up the job.
