TSMC to make chips for Apple's own 5G modem from 2023 - report

Wednesday 24 November 2021 | 13:32 CET | News
Apple wants to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm and have TSMC make chips for its 5G iPhone modems from 2023, The Nikkei reported. Sources said Apple would use TSMC's 4-nanometer chip production technology to mass produce its first in-house 5G modem chip. To complement the modem, Apple is also developing radio frequency and millimeter wave components. The company is also working on its own power management chip specifically for the modem. Qualcomm has so far provided all of these components for the latest iPhones series.
