Ubuntu phones to launch in two markets in October

Phones running Canonical's Ubuntu operating system will be available in two large geographic markets in October, founder and CEO Mark Shuttleworth told the Wall Street Journal. While not committing to North America being one of them, he said it was a key market for Ubuntu. Suttleworth added that the OS has drawn interest from carriers, many of which are keen to disrupt Apple and Google's smartphone market hegemony, although he declined to identify any carrier or phone partner. Being Linux-based, Ubuntu mobile OS is likely to give enterprise users simpler access to corporate IT systems. When Canonical announced plans for an Ubuntu mobile OS in early January, the company said it expected phones running the new OS to be available next year.
