UK govt unveils new 5G testbed funds; aims to simplify planning for mobile networks

The UK government has announced a GBP 40 million investment in 5G testbed and trial projects across industry as part of plans to improve mobile connectivity.

This is part of a wider GBP 200 million project to test 5G technology and was announced by Digital Secretary Jeremy Wright at the 5G World Conference as part of London Tech Week. This latest investment will focus on 5G testbed and trials in the logistics and manufacturing sectors. Previous investment has focused on the healthcare, transport, broadcasting and tourism sectors. A public competition for bids for these next 5G testbed and trials will launch later in 2019.

The UK government also announced plans to consult on proposals to simplify planning processes in England to support the further roll-out of 4G and faster deployment of 5G networks.
