UK independent networks boost full-fibre coverage by 30% in 2018 - study

Independent network providers in the UK increased their full-fibre coverage by 30 percent in 2018 to reach almost 1.3 million premises, according to new research by Point Topic for the Independent Networks Cooperative Association (INCA).

The research shows the total number of UK premises passed or addressed by alternative network operators (altnets) at almost 3.32 million, including over 2 million premises covered by fixed wireless access (FWA). The report says that independent network operators are aiming to reach 3.38 million premises with full-fibre by end-2020, rising to 15.96 million by 2025.

Point Topic says that UK independent network operators passed or addressed more than 1.29 million homes with fixed superfast or ultrafast broadband by end-2018, with the majority of these using ultrafast FTTP/H and FTTB technology. Independent full-fibre providers registered just short of 300,000 live connections at end-2018, up 43 percent during the year. FWA operators ended the year with around 110,000 connections, up 9 percent from 2017.
