UK plans to bring 100 Mbps to nearly all premises

UK chancellor George Osborne announced a new national plan to bring 100 Mbps broadband to almost all UK premises. He also confirmed plans to raise GBP 3.1 billion over five years through diverted profits tax, which has in the past been called colloquially the 'Google Tax'. The government will take further action to support rural broadband delivery and will consider raising the Universal Service Obligation from dial-up (28 kbps) to 5 Mbps, in addition to subsidising the costs of installing satellite equipment for superfast broadband.
