Universal leans on Spotify to limit free listening - report

Universal Music is using its licence negotiations with streaming music service Spotify to push for changes in the free Spotify service, which cannibalises music sales and is too similar to the Spotify subscription service, the Financial Times reports. A person close to the Vivendi subsidiary said there was clear evidence that the availability of free music on Spotify was hurting digital downloads from Apple's iTunes and other stores. Universal is not trying to convince Spotify to drop the free version of its service, but to limit it perhaps by capping listening time to prompt users to choose
