US chipmakers still waiting for sales licences to Huawei

Wednesday 11 September 2019 | 10:41 CET | News

US-based chipmakers are still awaiting licenses to ship products to Huawei, more than two months after President Donald Trump agreed to ease export restrictions on the Chinese company, the Wall Street Journal reports. Trump said at the G20 summit in June that he would ease the restrictions on Huawei to allow sales in cases not impacting national security. However, no licences have been granted yet.

A spokesman for the Commerce Department said it is reviewing applications from Huawei suppliers, which can require input from the Defense, State and Energy departments. The process is "ongoing", he said.

Several representatives for chipmakers and other companies seeking the licences said they were frustrated by the amount of time it was taking to process the applications, which they have been told are complete. "Someone’s looking at them, but it’s our general impression that they aren’t looking very closely," one company representative who has submitted applications told the WSJ.
