US clears IBM's server business sale to Lenovo
IBM has received the clearance of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS) for the USD 2.3 billion sale of its x86-based server business to Lenovo. IBM said the sale will allow it to focus on system and software innovations in areas such as cognitive computing, Big Data and cloud, adding that current x86 customers will have a strong partner going forward. Lenovo confirmed the CFIUS clearance, saying that the move completes the regulatory process in the US although a number of regulatory and business processes are still being worked through. The Chinese company said it was on track to close the deal, as well as its acquisition of Motorola Mobility, by the end of the year.
