US consumer spending in winter holiday up 5% in 2016

Overall US consumer spending during the winter holiday increased 4.7 percent in 2016 compared to 1.8 percent in 2015, according to a report by First Data. Retail e-commerce transactions grew by 12 percent and represented over one fifth (21.3 percent) of all holiday spending, a substantial increase from 15.4 percent in 2015. Overall spending was up year-over-year this holiday season, but some retailers did not attract many customers. Retail spending increased 3.6 percent year-over-year compared to 3.3 percent in 2015, but department stores and clothing & accessories retailers took a hit.
