US govt unable to force Facebook to wiretap Messenger - report

US government investigators have failed to pressure Facebook to wiretap calls over its Messenger app in a test case in California, according to unnamed sources cited by Reuters. Law enforcement wanted to spy on the voice conversations of members of the MS-13 gang and had pushed a district court to hold the social networking giant in contempt of court for refusing to permit real-time listening. However, an affidavit submitted by an FBI agent dated 30 August said that "currently there is no practical method available by which law enforcement can monitor" calls on Facebook Messenger.
