US operators must offer same services after switch to fibre

The US Federal Communications Commission has approved plans requiring operators to notify customers of the shutdown of copper networks and offer similar replacement services. Under the new rules, retail customers must be told at least three months in advance and wholesale customers six months before any copper network is retired. If the copper is replaced with fibre and the same quality of services is available to customers, no prior approval is needed from the FCC for retiring copper. The FCC also started a consultation on how to evaluate and compare the replacement and legacy services.
