US President Trump to invite social media firms to White House later this month

Friday 12 July 2019 | 11:47 CET | News

US President Trump held a Social Media Summit at the White House on 11 July, the Wall Street Journal reported. For the event, the president invited a number of conservative social media users and stressed “Big Tech” must not censor any US voices. He said he was directing his administration to “explore all legislative and regulatory solutions to protect free speech and the free speech of all Americans.” No tech representatives were invited to the summit but the president added he plans to hold a meeting for major social media platforms later this month. He will also be inviting members of Congress to the meeting, and perhaps some conservative social media users.

Alphabet, Facebook and Twitter said they have not received any invitations yet, Reuters reported.

The Internet Association said in a statement ahead of the 11 July summit that its members have no incentive to be biased. “Internet companies are not biased against any political ideology, and conservative voices in particular have used social media to great effect,” the group said in a statement. “Internet companies depend upon their users’ trust from across the political spectrum to grow and succeed.”
