US seeks USD 1 bln in asset seizures over Uzbek licences

US authorities have asked their European counterparts to seize about USD 1 billion in assets as part of the investigation into corruption in the award of mobile licences in Uzbekistan. The US Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission started looking at the case last year, after prosecutors in several European countries already were on the case. US prosecutors believe Vimpelcom, MTS and TeliaSonera funneled hundreds of millions of dollars to businesses controlled by Gulnara Karimova, the elder daughter of Uzbek President Islam Karimov, in an effort to secure spectrum licences
