US states confirm antitrust investigation into Google dominance in online ads, search

Tuesday 10 September 2019 | 11:02 CET | News

Taxes Attorney General Ken Paxton has confirmed an investigation into Google’s business practices, looking at its "overarching control" of online advertising markets and search traffic and whether this may have led to anticompetitive behavior that harms consumers. The investigation includes 50 attorneys general, from both major political parties.

Paxton said legal experts from each state will work in cooperation with federal authorities to assess competitive conditions for online services and "ensure that Americans have access to free digital markets". Google and Facebook, together with Amazon and Apple, are already the subject of another antitrust review at a federal level by the Justice Department and Federal Trade Commission.

Google confirmed it had been questioned by the DoJ and was cooperating with the investigation, as it would with any further probes.

The Texas AG said they had seen evidence that Google’s business practices "may have undermined consumer choice, stifled innovation, violated users’ privacy, and put Google in control of the flow and dissemination of online information."  Past investigations of Google uncovered violations ranging from advertising illegal drugs in the US to three antitrust actions brought by the European Commission. "None of these previous investigations, however, fully address the source of Google’s sustained market power and the ability to engage in serial and repeated business practices with the intention to protect and maintain that power," Paxton said.
