Valim named new president of Nextel Brasil

Latin American mobile operator NII Holdings has announced the appointment of Francisco Tosta Valim Filho as the new president of its Brazilian unit Nextel Brazil. Valim replaces Gokul Hemmady, who has served as Nextel Brazil’s president since 2013, and will report directly to NII's CEO Steve Shindler. Prior to joining Nextel Brazil, Valim was CEO of Via Varejo, one of the largest electronic and furniture retailers in Latin America, and from 2011 to 2013 he served as CEO of telecoms operator Oi.

NII emerged from bankruptcy in June after a restructure that saw it sell Nextel Mexico to AT&T for USD 1.9 billion. It continues to operate under the Nextel brand in Brazil and Argentina but is said to be discussing the sale of its Argentine unit to concentrate on its Brazilian operations.

NII admits financial control problems

NII Holdings, owner of Brazilian mobile operator Nextel, has admitted "material weakness" in its internal financial controls and announced the resignation of a member of its Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. NII Holdings seeks alternatives for Nextel Brasil – report

NII Holdings, the parent company of mobile telephony operator Nextel, is exploring strategic alternatives for its business in Brazil, sources close to the issue told Reuters. NII held talks in recent weeks with investment banks on contracting a financial advisor to exploit the options, including a possible sale, according to the same sources. NII has made no comments on this report.

Clarin buys 49% stake in Nextel Argentina for USD 178 mln

Argentinian media conglomerate Clarin has reached a deal with NII Holdings to acquire a 49 percent stake in Nextel Argentina, with an option to acquire the remaining 51 percent pending regulatory approvals. Clarin said the total amount paid for the stake in Argentina's fourth largest mobile operator was USD 178 million, of which USD 159 million was paid up front, with the remaining amount due within 30 days. Brazilian regulator approves new shareholders at Nextel

Brazil's National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) has authorized the entry of new shareholders in NII Holding, the company that owns operator Nextel Brasil. The expectation is that Capital Research and Management Company, the biggest creditor of NII Holdings, will own approximately 37.58 percent of the company, becoming its largest shareholder. This follows a debt restructuring and bankruptcy process at NII.

NII Holdings reported a net loss of 64,000 subscribers in the second quarter, as the weak economic climate in Brazil led to fewer customer additions than hoped. Brazil antitrust body clears transfer of NII Holdings stake

Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defence (Cade) has approved, without restrictions, the transfer of the 37.58 percent of NII Holdings to the fund Capital Research and Management (CapRe), the largest holder of debentures of the US company, which controls Nextel Brasil, reports Teletime.
