Verizon buys NFL live streaming rights for Yahoo Sports

Verizon has expanded its partnership with the National Football League in the US to stream live matches on Yahoo Sports. The partnership will start with live streams of the NFL play-offs in January on Yahoo and Yahoo Sports, in addition to go90 and the NFL mobile app.

Verizon is already a sponsor of the American football league and has shown matches on its go90 mobile TV service. It will continue to offer NFL benefits to customers through its loyalty programme Verizon Up and also work with NFL teams on 'smart stadium' technologies.

In addition to the expanded availability of live games, the new agreement will provide fans mobile access to NFL highlights, coverage of NFL throughout the week and year, and jointly-developed original content. Verizon said it will provide the NFL with a wide audience thanks to its unit Oath’s lead in US monthly mobile millennial reach and more than 200 million US monthly unique mobile digital views.

The distribution of live matches through the Yahoo Sports portal and app means the games will be available to customers of any mobile operator in the US, not just Verizon subscribers. The NFL has previously worked with Yahoo on streaming individual matches, as well as with providers such as Amazon and Twitter. No financial details of the agreement with Verizon were disclosed.
