Verizon completes interoperability trial of NG-PON2
Verizon has successfully completed what it believes is the first interoperability trial of NG-PON2 technology at its Verizon Labs location in Waltham, Massachusetts. The trial is a step in the company's plan to introduce services based on NG-PON2 technology to customers on its fibre access network, including the Fios network.

During this trial, Verizon demonstrated that several equipment manufacturers' equipment on either end of a single fibre can be used to deliver service without impacting the end-user. Until now, equipment from the same vendor had to be used on both endpoints.

The operator's partners in the trial were Adtran, Broadcom, Cortina Access and Ericsson (in partnership with Calix). The trial tested plans aligned with Verizon’s Open OMCI specifications, which define the OLT-to-ONT interface and will be shared with the industry in the next few months.

Verizon picks Calix's E9-2 Intelligent Edge System for large-scale NG-PON2 deployments

Calix announced that Verizon selected the AXOS E9-2 Intelligent Edge System to begin large-scale NG-PON2 deployments in the first quarter. These deployments will include the AXOS RPm (Routing Protocol module for Layer 3) and the AXOS SMm (Subscriber Management module for disaggregated Broadband Network Gateway). By leveraging an always-on, converged services platform, Verizon will deploy a single access network for residential, business, and mobile services.

Verizon proves interoperability of NG-PON2 during trial

Verizon successfully proved interoperability of NG-PON2 at its Technology Center in Waltham, Massachusets, during May. The trial focused on ONT management and provisioning and used Verizon's OpenOMCI specification, which defines the OLT-to-ONT interface and is aligned with the ITU-T Recommendation G.989.3. Verizon, along with Adtran, Broadcom, Cortina Access, Ericsson/Calix and Intel, worked together to develop the OpenOMCI specification that led to the successful trial.

Broadband Forum launches new council for NG-PON2

The Broadband Forum created the new NG-PON2 Council whose aim is to accelerate the development of NG-PON2 technology as it continues to gain momentum. The NG-PON2 Council will work under the banner of the Broadband Forum, providing greater access to the Broadband Forum's wide range of member operators and vendors. The integration will be finalised after the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exhibition (OFC) in Los Angeles, where the NG-PON2 Forum will hold a workshop session.

Verizon has selected vendors to start testing NG-PON2 (next-generation passive optical network) equipment in its Innovation Lab in Massachusetts.
