Verizon, Samsung to bring 5G smartphone to US in H1
Verizon and Samsung have announced plans to bring a commercial 5G smartphone to market in the first half of next year. The companies will unveil a proof of concept at the annual Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, set to take place in Maui this week. The device will be powered by the upcoming flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon Mobile Platform with the Snapdragon X50 5G NR modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end and antenna elements. 

Verizon launched 5G services in October, going live with its 5G Home service in Houston, Indianapolis, Los Angeles and Sacramento. The Verizon 5G mobility service will go live early next year, with a quick expansion planned, the company said. Once available, Samsung 5G smartphone users will be able to use Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network.

Verizon starts pre-sales of 5G moto mod, plans USD 10 charge for unlimited 5G data

Verizon announced that it will start pre-sales of the 5G Moto Mod from 14 March. First announced last year, the mod clips on to the Moto Z3 smartphone to make it work over 5G networks. The launch comes as Verizon prepares to start 5G mobile services in the first half of 2019, with Chicago and Minneapolis announced as the first cities for the service.

Verizon is holding a meeting with analysts on 22 February and will outline its strategic vision for investors. This includes its 5G roll-out schedule, which will include mobile services in the first half of this year and more fixed 5G coverage in the second half.

Qualcomm unveils first 5G smartphone processor, first devices expected in H1 2019

Qualcomm has unveiled its first processor for 5G smartphones and latest flagship chip, the Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform. In addition to multi-gigabit broadband speeds with the 5G modem, the device upgrades again the on-device AI, extended reality and camera opportunities and supports new features such as advanced gaming and in-display fingerprint readers. Samsung said it will use the platform to launch its firs 5G devices in the first half of 2019.

AT&T announced that it will launch a 5G smartphone with Samsung in the first half of 2019. The announcement comes a day after rival Verizon also said it would have a Samsung 5G phone available early next year.

Inseego, Verizon demo VR telemedicine over 5G at Qualcomm summit

Inseego and Verizon will unveil MiFi 5G NR mobile broadband technology on 4 December at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit in Maui. The two companies will conduct a live virtual reality telemedicine demonstration in partnership with Columbia University using an Inseego mobile hotspot device, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Mobile Platform and Snapdragon X50 5G modem and antenna modules with integrated RF transceiver, RF front-end and antenna elements, running on Verizon's 5G NR mobile network

Apple has no plans to launch 5G-enabled device before 2020 - report

Apple will wait until 2020 before bringing a 5G smartphone to the market, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the company's plans. Samsung said recently that it will be launching a 5G smartphone in the US with Verizon early next year. As it did with 3G and 4G, Apple will hold out for up to a year after initial deployment before introducing 5G enabled devices.

Verizon shows first 5G mobile data with Moto Z3 smartphone

Verizon said it completed the world's first 5G data transmission on a smartphone on a commercial 5G New Radio network. The successful test was completed with a Moto Z3 paired with a 5G moto mod in Providence, Rhode Island, in cooperation with Motorola, Samsung and Qualcomm. The smartphone is already for sale at Verizon, and customers can upgrade it to 5G with the clip-on modem when Verizon's 5G mobile commercial service begins in 2019.

'First on 5G' members will get 5G Home service free for the first three months, free installation and equipment, and early access to new services such as 5G mobility. 5G Home customers will also get YouTube TV free for the first three months and a free Apple TV 4K or Google Chromecast Ultra device at installation.

Verizon announced that it will offer Apple TV and YouTube TV when it launches its residential 5G broadband service later this year. The TV services will be bundled with internet access when the 5G service launches in the cities Houston, Sacramento, Los Angeles and Indianapolis.
