Verizon starts pre-sales of 5G moto mod, plans USD 10 charge for unlimited 5G data

Verizon announced that it will start pre-sales of the 5G Moto Mod from 14 March. First announced last year, the mod clips on to the Moto Z3 smartphone to make it work over 5G networks. The launch comes as Verizon prepares to start 5G mobile services in the first half of 2019, with Chicago and Minneapolis announced as the first cities for the service.

Verizon first launched a 5G fixed wireless service for home broadband last year, based on its own proprietary standards. The mobile 5G service, using 5G New Radio, is expected to roll out to over 30 cities in 2019.

In a video posted on its website for the launch of the 5G mod, Verizon said customers will be able to add unlimited 5G data to their plan for an extra USD 10 per month, if they already have a Go, Above or Beyond unlimited plan. The 5G mod will cost USD 50 in a special introductory offer during the pre-sale period, and later retail for USD 350. Verizon plans to launch its first 5G smartphones later in the first half.
