Verizon has outlined the gains made by its ThingSpace platform since launch in October 2015. ThingSpace is a platform allowing businesses of all sizes to build consumer applications enabled by the IoT. The company said at Mobile World Congress that over 4,000 developers are now using ThingSpace. It announced plans to open up the platform to third-party network and technology service providers. Verizon will also introduce a new set of tools addressing security concerns.
The company said that ThingSpace now offers device connectivity in over 120 countries and will be expanded to nearly 200 countries by the end of the year. Design and integration with Nokia and Ericsson is complete, paving the way for the launch of Verizon’s new highly scalable IoT network later this year.
The company’s new IoT Security Credentialing (IoT SC) solution will become available on ThingSpace this spring. It will add an OTT layer of security to enable developers to better protect applications and devices regardless of service provider or type of transport deployed. IoT SC will also secure sensitive data and the edge of the network.
Verizon has also highlighted a series of new IoT deployments and partnerships. It has teamed up with French crop modelling company ITK to provide farmers and vineyard owners with better intelligence through data and analytics. Verizon also delivered intelligent video solutions for Georgetown University and Napa County Airport. The company has established the Chicago suburb of Bedford Park as a Verizon Smart City Municipal Innovation Centre using its IoT solutions for lighting, public safety and traffic.
In addition, Verizon has developed Intelligent Track & Trace, a near real-time supply chain management platform currently in deployment with a global pharmaceuticals company. It is due to become commercially available this spring.
