Viettel wins 900 MHz spectrum tender in Peru

Vietnamese military-run Viettel has won the tender for four frequency bands in the 900 MHz spectrum in Peru. Peru's Agency for Promotion of Private Investment (ProInversion) has awarded Viettel 32 MHz of spectrum in the 899-915 MHz and 944-960 MHz bands in Lima and Callao provinces as well as in the 902-915 MHz and 947-960 MHz bands for the rest of the country.

Viettel committed to overall investments of USD 48.43 million for the 20-year license. Viettel has one year and a half to deploy its 900 MHz mobile network nationwide. The operator will also have to provide free broadband connection for 718 state institutions, including 438 schools, 112 hospitals and health centers and 168 municipalities by August 2014.

Peru to launch 4G spectrum tender in H1 2013

Peru's Agency for Promotion of Private Investment (ProInversion) will launch a 4G spectrum tender in the first or second quarter of 2013. Peru will auction two spectrum blocks in the 1710 – 1770 MHz and 2110 – 2170 MHz frequency bands. Tender winners will be able to provide 4G mobile internet services nationwide, Andina news agency reports, citing Jesus Guillen, head of telecommunications projects at Proinversion.

Peru to award 900 MHz spectrum on 14 August

Peru's Agency for Promotion of Private Investment (ProInversion) has set the date for the 900 MHz band spectrum tender for 16 August, Andina news agency reports. The government is auctioning spectrum in the 899-915MHz and 944-960MHz frequency bands for provision of telecoms services in the Lima and Callao regions. The tender also includes spectrum in the 902-915MHz and 947-960MHz frequency bands for provision of telecoms services in other Peruvian regions. The license is valid for 20 years.

ZTE wins Viettel 2G/3G network contract in Peru

ZTE has won a national 2G/3G wireless network project in Peru with mobile operator Viettel. During the first phase of the project, ZTE will build more than 2,000 base stations. Under the terms of the deal, ZTE will provide its Uni-RAN service to Viettel. This platform includes a series of products based on SDR technology. ZTE will also provide operation management services such as its radio network optimization network tool to Viettel.

Viettel mobile ops launch in Peru delayed until 2013

Vietnamese military-run mobile operator Viettel has postponed the launch of its operations in Peru for May 2013, RPP Noticias reports, citing industry sources. Viettel initially planned to launch mobile operations in Peru in May this year. According to the same source, the decision is reportedly due to a delay in the approval of Viettel's 'coverage plan' by the Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Communications.

Movistar in talks for Peru mobile license renewal

Telefonica and the Peruvian Ministry of Transport and Communications are negotiating the operator's mobile license renewal for the next 20 years. Movistar acquired spectrum in the 800 and 1,900 MHz frequency bands in Peru in 2005, when it purchased the assets of Bellsouth. These concessions expired on 26 and 28 June this year, respectively, Peru.com reports. The audit reports that will determine Movistar's mobile concession renewal in Lima and Callao are expected to be completed by November.

Movistar Peru should pay USD 830 million to renew its mobile licenses in Peru, local newspaper Gestion reports, citing Guillermo Thornberry, president of Peruvian telecommunications regulator Osiptel.
