VNPT to launch 5G trials in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City
VNPT has received the Ministry of Information and Communications’ approval for its planned 5G services trial in Vietnam. The Ministry granted licenses for the rollout of 5G service tests to three operators, namely VNPT, MobiFone and Viettel. VNPT reports it is now accelerating preparations for its 5G tests in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Back in February, VNPT announced it would start 5G tests immediately after receiving authorisation from the Ministry of Information and Communications. In addition to 5G testing, VNPT also said it prepares to produce 5G network devices.

Market competitor Viettel, in partnership with Ericsson, demonstrated the first 5G connection in Vietnam in May this year. The speed test showed Viettel's 5G connection runs at 1.5-1.7 Gbps. The connection used the 3.7-3.8 GHz (C-Band) and 27.5-28.5 GHz (mmWave) frequency. Viettel then announced plans to launch other 5G trials in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The operator intends to install 70 5G trial BTSs in Hanoi and HCM City.

The network offers real-time 5G end-user services, such as VR gaming and 8K streaming, as well as Nokia's Fixed Wireless Access. Viettel and Nokia initially deployed 10 5G base stations in the area of Ward 12, District 10, Ho Chi Minh City. The project sets the basis for a comprehensive evaluation of the band, coverage and application of 5G before commercialization in 2020.

The Vietnamese government has announced plans to accelerate its privatisation strategy by selling stakes in 93 state-owned companies by end-2020, Reuters reports, citing a government statement. The government seeks to sell stakes of up to 50 percent in mobile operator MobiFone and as well as in Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Group (VNPT).

VNPT to launch 5G service trial in Ho Chi Minh City

Vietnamese operator VNPT plans to launch a 5G pilot in Ho Chi Minh City. The trial will run from September 2019 to May 2020, Vietnam News Agency reports. According to the Department of Information and Communications, VNPT's HCM City branch will complete the infrastructure deployment for the 5G trial in August.

VNPT Technology opens showroom in Hai Phong city

VNPT Technology, a unit of Vietnamese state-owned operator VNPT, has inaugurated its showroom in Hai Phong city. Visitors will be able to test VNPT Technology's products, such as ADSL modems, Wi-Fi access points, smartphones, set-top-boxes, as well as access device maintenance services. VNPT Technology also reports that up to now, it has sold over 7 millions products on the local market, and has also exported its products to Laos, Myanmar, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and Indonesia.

Metfone to launch 5G service trials in Phnom Penh

Vietnamese operator Viettel Cambodia (Metfone), in partnership with Telecom Cambodia, will launch 5G trials in the Phnom Penh capital. Viettel is currently installing 5G base transceivers and plans to start the trials this month, VNExpress reports, citing Nhong Dinthon, the company's deputy general director. Viettel Cambodia and Telecom Cambodia plan to share their IT infrastructure, as well as invest in areas such as e-government, e-health, e-education, e-agriculture, smart cities, and the IoT.

Viettel and Ericsson demonstrated the first 5G connection in Vietnam. The speed test result shows Viettel's 5G connection, which uses Ericsson products and test devices, runs at 1.5-1.7 Gbps. The Vietnamese government has awarded its first trial 5G license to state-owned operator Viettel. The license allows Viettel to launch 5G services in two of Vietnam's largest cities - Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City - on a trial basis, Reuters reports, citing a stetemnet from the country's Ministry of Information and Communications. Vietnam plans to launch 5G networks in 2020, with a testing phase scheduled for rollout in 2019, according to the country's information minister Nguyen Manh Hung. Le Van Tuan, deputy director of Vietnam's Authority of Radio Frequency Management, also said that a separate frequency band will be reserved for 5G services to ensure adequate bandwidth.
