Vodacom Group FY revenue rises 4.3% to ZAR 90.1 bln, customers up 5.8%, net profit dips

Vodacom Group said its revenue increased by 4.3 percent to ZAR 90.1 billion in the year ended 31 March. It ended the fiscal year with 110 million customers, up by 5.8 percent. Operating profit rose 1.1 percent to ZAR 24.51 billion, or 7.4 percent excluding a one-off, non-cash IFRS 2 charge of ZAR 1.4 billion and transaction costs of ZAR 124 million relating to the BEE deal. Net profit decreased slightly to ZAR 15.44 billion from ZAR 15.56 billion in 2018.

EBITDA rose by 2.4 billion to ZAR 33.69 billion from ZAR 32.89 billion in 2018, slightly offset by depreciation and amortisation, which grew at 6.9 percent. 

Earnings per share (EPS) decreased by 8.4 percent to ZAR 8.67 from ZAR 9.47 while headline earnings per share (HEPS) declined by 6.6 percent to ZAR 8.62 from ZAR 9.23 in the same period of 2018, hit by the new BEE ownership deal in the current financial year, partially offset by an increase in contributions from Safaricom, acquired in the prior year. Excluding these transactions, HEPS increased 2.6 percent. The full year dividend of ZAR 7.95 per share is impacted by additional shares issued for the BEE transaction.

Shareholders who attended the company's AGM on 30 August approved a special dividend of KES 0.62 per share, amounting to KES 24.84 billion, and a final ordinary dividend of KES 1.25 per share, which totals KES 50.08 billion. This brings the total divided to be paid out to KES 1.87 a share.

Vodacom Tanzania FY service revenues rise to TZS 1.02 tln

Vodacom Tanzania service revenue increased to TZS 1.02 trillion during the year to end March, from 977 billion the year before, buoyed by strong growth at M-Pesa, data and messaging services. Thet net profit dropped however to TZS 90 billion from 170 billion. Both basic and diluted earnings per share also fell, by 51 percent to TZS 40.52 from 83.81.

Vodafone meets FY guidance, cuts dividend to focus on debt reduction

Vodafone Group reported underlying EBITDA up 3.1 percent to EUR 14.14 billion in its fiscal year to March, in line with its guidance. The company said low single-digit growth should continue in the new year, supported by a continued focus on costs. The company reduced its dividend to 9 cents a share from 15.07 cents the previous year, saying it plans to focus more on debt reduction.

Vodacom South Africa service revenue increased by 2.1 percent to ZAR 55.75 billion in the year to end March, from 54.62 billion the year before, despite the implementation of deliberate pricing transformation and a low economic growth environment. Growth in the second half of the year was negatively impacted by the transition between national roaming partners and the change in call termination rates.

Safaricom CEO to leave office in August

Kenyan operator Safaricom chief executive Bob Collymore plans to step down in August for health reasons, but the government's insistence he should be succeeded by a Kenyan has delayed the announcement of a replacement, Reuters reported citing two company sources. Collymore took a nine-month medical leave in late 2017 to return to his native England to battle cancer, and has now indicated he wants to step down, the sources said.

Vodacom Tanzania MD, four others arrested over alleged fraudulent use of facilities

Newly appointed Vodacom Tanzania MD Hisham Hendi and four other staff were arrested and charged in Dar es Salaam over alleged fraudulent use of facilities, the company said. Hendi, an Egyptian, and the other staff had been questioned "in relation to the alleged fraudulent use of network facilities". Vodacom said it is fully cooperating with an investigation team led by the Tanzanian police.

Vodacom South Africa has described as "groundbreaking" the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling that it is allowed to use certain Telkom ducts and sleeves to roll out its fibre network, MyBroadband reported. Vodacom Group, its existing BEE partners and a newly formed staff scheme have announced a broad-based BEE transaction of up to ZAR 17.5 billion that will see the BEE partners exchange their current shareholding in Vodacom South Africa (Vodacom SA) for a stake of between 5.8 percent and 6.25 percent of Vodacom Group, as enlarged by the transaction.
