Vodacom South Africa offers 3 months' free Showmax access with dedicated free data
Showmax has launched a deal with Vodacom South Africa, granting three months of free access to the Showmax Video on Demand (VoD) service and three months of free Showmax data. Vodacom customers who add Showmax to their bill between 01 November and 31 January 2019 will receive 15 GB of free Showmax data (5 GB per month for three months). The usual Showmax ZAR 99 per month subscription fee will be waived for three months.

MultiChoice South Africa mulls changes to VoD services

MultiChoice South Africa plans to redesign its video-on-demand service DStv Now, and new, local content for its stand-alone VOD platform Showmax, reports TechCentral. MultiChoice Africa Group's Connected Video unit head Niclas Ekdahl said it is making major user interface changes to DStv Now to make it easier for subscribers to find relevant content. A key priority, is harnessing user data to deliver content to viewers that is "relevant on an individual basis".

Vodacom South Africa launches Super HD Voice

Vodacom South Africa said it is partnering device manufacturers to introduce Enhanced Voice Services (EVS), also known as Super High Definition (SHD) voice or HD Voice+ on a livem commercial network. The operator said VoLTE subscribers using a compatible handset on its network can now hear the improved voice clarity made possible by the EVS codec.

MTN South Africa offers Entertainment Pass zero-rated data bundles with some plans

MTN South Africa is offering Entertainment Pass bundles providing contract customers with free data access to social media, music and video streaming. Customers on selected price plans can use Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, Deezer, Simfy Africa, DStv Now and ShowMax for free. It is available to people who sign up for a new contract or who upgrade to certain plans.

Internet TV company Showmax is now available for free to DStv Premium subscribers, reports Nextvame. No other important changes have been made, barring bug fixes and stability developments stated in the app's change log. Showmax is currently priced at USD 6.95 per month.

Vodacom South Africa has warned Rain that it will face network capacity constraints in the future, which can cost a lot of money to fix, MyBroadband reported. The firm's CEO Shameel Joosub explained that Vodacom partnered with Rain to get access to its spectrum to address its network capacity constraints.

Vodacom South Africa to launch 200Mbps fibre-to-the-home

Vodacom South Africa says it will launch 200 Mbps fibre-to-the-home products in the coming weeks, doubling its current peak speed of 100 Mbps, reports BusinessTech. Gary Hart, executive head for managed network and unified communications at Vodacom Business, told the MyBroadband Fibre Conference that there is a strong demand for faster connectivity in South Africa, which includes demand from smaller cities and towns.

MultiChoice says Netflix has an unfair advantage over DStv

Multichoice South Africa CEO Calvo Mawela says that Netflix currently has an unfair advantage to capture the online market in South Africa, reports BusinessTech. Mawela said he is not afraid of competition but finds the rapidly declining DStv subscriber numbers troubling. Mawela said that pay-TV is under pressure in terms of its survival, as viewer habits are changing and people are moving online.
