Telecompaper’s Dutch Mobile Operators Q1 report shows Vodafone had a 22.6 percent share of retail postpaid subscribers, moving ahead of KPN with 22.4 percent. KPN has lost 2.0 percent points of market share in the past year, while Vodafone added over 160,000 postpaid subscribers in the same period.
The figures cover the premium brands Vodafone and KPN and exclude their secondary brands such as Hollandsnieuwe or Telfort. On the total mobile market, including prepaid, the KPN brand is still slightly larger than Vodafone, with 21.6 percent of retail Sims versus 21.2 percent for Vodafone.
VodafoneZiggo launched its fixed-mobile offering later than KPN, in April 2017, but appears to be catching up quickly. The company said in its Q1 report that 33 percent of fixed broadband customers were also taking mobile services from the group, up from 28 percent a year earlier.
FMC discounts put pressure on ARPU
The discounts offered on the FMC packages however are weighing on Vodafone’s mobile ARPU. The company offers postpaid customers who also take fixed services from Ziggo a discount of EUR 2.50-5.00 on the monthly mobile subscription costs. This has put pressure on mobile service revenues and contributed to a drop in Vodafone’s Q1 postpaid retail ARPU of 4.6 percent on an annual basis. Nevertheless, its ARPU remains the highest of the three Dutch mobile operators.
