Vodafone Germany to launch mobile wallet test

Vodafone Germany plans to launch a pilot of its new Vodafone Wallet product in December. The Vodafone Wallet allows customers to use their smartphones to make purchases with their bank cards. Kasseler Bank and Raffeisenbank Baunatal clients will be the first to receive the product for a seven-month trial. 

To use Vodafone Wallet, test participants will receive an NFC smartphone installed with a NFC SIM and the Vodafone Wallet app. The SIM card acts as a digital Girocard, protected by a security element. 

Clients can pay for purchases by holding their mobile phone against the payment terminal. During the test phase, the special-issue smartphones will collect information around the usage of the Vodafone Wallet app. 

The news comes two weeks after Deutsche Telekom announced plans to discontinue its MyWallet service in Germany, citing a slower-than-expected customer uptake.

Over half Germans bank online

Over half (53%) of Germans aged 16-74 use online banking, according to the latest figures from the Federal Statistics Office (Destatis). This is an increase of 10 percent points compared to 2010 and puts Germany ahead of the EU average, of 49 percent. Vodafone Germany brings Visa, PayPal to mobile wallet

Vodafone Germany's mobile payment platform Vodafone Wallet can now process payments via Visa and PayPal. Customers can use their existing PayPal accounts and Visa credit cards to make contactless payments using their NFC smartphone. Alternatively, customers can sign up with PayPal directly via the Vodafone Wallet platform. Vodafone Wallet works at all POS terminals with a card reader and does not require the phone to be connected to the network.

Vodafone Germany service revenue up 1.8%

Vodafone Germany grew its service revenue in the fiscal third quarter to December compared to the year prior, though overall revenue was slightly down. Vodafone Germany reported total revenue of EUR 2.69 billion, a 0.6 percent decrease on the same period in 2015. Service revenue reached EUR 2.51 billion, a 1.8 percent increase on a year earlier. Vodafone attributed the rise in service revenue to "strong fixed customer growth and an improved performance in branded consumer mobile."

Vodafone Germany adds more HD channels

Vodafone Germany is offering an additional six HD-quality stations in its television package. In the free to air offering, clients can now access Sat.1 Gold HD, ProSieben MAXX HD and Eurosport 1 HD in addition to existing channels. Clients subscribed to a premium package can also watch ProSieben FUN HD, Sat.1 emotions HD and Kabel eins CLASSICS HD. If the new channels do not automatically become available, Vodafone advises clients to re-tune their TVs.

Vodafone Germany has launched its Young tariff series for clients aged from 18 to 28, offering flexible options and discounted bundles. Deutsche Telekom discontinues MyWallet app in Germany

Deutsche Telekom will withdraw its MyWallet app from the German market over the coming months. Telekom gave confirmation to Heise Online that it was currently informing German clients of the planned withdrawal of MyWallet, and that the app would be deactivated nationwide by the end of the year. The deactivation in Germany should not affect MyWallet's operations in Poland, where the app made its debut in 2012.
