Vodafone, Huawei trial GSM-LTE dynamic spectrum sharing
Huawei and Vodafone Spain announced that the world’s first GSM-LTE dynamic spectrum sharing (GL DSS) trial has been successfully completed. According to Huawei, GL DSS significantly improves LTE capacity by maximizing wireless spectrum use and the trial represents a major milestone in the innovation of its Single Radio Controller (SRC), first released in 2013. Several operators, including Vodafone, currently hold bandwidths of 20 MHz at 1.8 GHz, of which 10 MHz is used for LTE and the rest for high GSM traffic. Huawei selected Vodafone’s Mobile Access Competence Centre in Spain to trial its spectrum management tool, which brings flexibility to spectrum resource allocation, providing more spectrum for LTE compared to the standard fixed configuration. The trial verified GL DSS performance in Vodafone Spain’s commercial network, with results showing that the technology can improve LTE capacity by up to 50 percent, making 15 MHz effectively available for LTE with limited impact to GSM services.

A total of 50+ GSM/LTE refarming networks have been deployed worldwide for a better mobile broadband user experience, said Huawei.
