Nokia and Vodafone Italia have taken advantage of their appearance at Mobile World Congress to provide further details of their project to test 5G technologies via the 3.6-3.8 GHz band in the city of Milan. In December Vodafone announced that it will be working with a total of 28 partners on the EUR 90 million trial to test the full potential of 5G in the northern Italian city. As the operator’s technology partner, Nokia is providing a 5G network and application solutions to support the creation of the city-wide 5G test network.

The initial field testing activities have included a demonstration of high-definition video over pre-standard standalone 5G, which was successfully conducted on a live 5G site by the railway station in Milan’s Piazzale Cadorna. The test was performed with an experimental device provided by Prisma Telecom Testing connected to Nokia’s massive MIMO 5G platform, demonstrating how the very low latency of 5G serves to enhance customer experience of video applications.

Vodafone and Nokia said the trial will see them developing more advanced use cases across various industries, including healthcare, traffic management and tourism. The 5G network will eventually cover 80 percent of the city and surrounding metropolitan areas by the end of this year and 100 percent by 2019.
