Vodafone launches first NB-IoT network in Spain

Vodafone Spain has announced the activation of the first network using standardised NB-IoT (narrowband Internet of Things) in Spain. The operator launched the network in Madrid and Valencia after upgrading existing 4G base stations using the 800 MHz licensed spectrum frequency band. Up to 100,000 everyday objects in difficult to reach locations can now be connected to each base station via the NB-IoT technology, said Vodafone. In October the company announced that it would launch its first NB-IoT services in the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland and Spain in the first quarter of 2017.

Vodafone Spain added that it has already tested the network in separate smart parking and smart water meter trials conducted in the two launch cities. In Madrid, a sensor connected to the NB-IoT network at Vodafone’s headquarters updated the availability of parking spots in real time, reflecting the occupancy status on a smartphone app, while in Valencia the network was used to monitor water meters managed by Aguas de Valencia.

The NB-IoT network will be extended to Barcelona,  Seville, Bilbao and Malaga in the coming weeks to reach over 1,000 base stations, enabling the connection of up to IoT 100 million devices, by the end of March.
