Telefonica and Huawei have teamed up with smart metering products provider Kamstrup to launch what the partners describe as the first project using NarrowBand Internet of Things technology (NB-IoT) in Latin America. During the trial, one of the leading water utilities in Chile successfully used the telemetry platform and real user data to monitor water use and detect leaks and any other abnormal situations in residential customer homes. Kamstrup provided the smart meters, Huawei updated the NB-IoT network and Telefonica Chile's R&D Centre helped design and plan the technical tests.
Telefonica said it will now use the 700 MHz LTE network to expand the project to 300 residential water meters to demonstrate how public service companies can achieve efficient operations through IoT solutions.
