Vodafone Spain expands on ADSL TV service plans

Vodafone Spain has announced plans to launch an internet TV service carrying free and subscription DTT channels, VoD and multimedia content over ADSL before Christmas. Making the announcement at the SIMO trade fair in Madrid, the operator said it had yet to decide whether customers would pay a monthly subscription or pay on a usage basis, but that pricing would be competitive, Efe reports. Company president Francisco Roman revealed a few days ago that a planned internet TV service would use a Huawei HG553 set-top device. The company added that, in the future, the service could integrate services such as Google TV. Vodafone, which focused only on mobile until it bought the Spanish assets of Tele2, was the only major operator in Spain which had yet to build TV into its offer, writes Cinco Dias. After Ono's cable TV came Telefonica's Imagenio service over ADSL and similar offerings from Jazztel and Orange Spain. Cinco Dias affirms that Vodafone's Internet TV service will go live in November and that Vodafone learned from its rivals' mistakes and will not produce its own content but will rely on Spain's current line-up of DTT channels. Its STBs will also be able to receive 3D DTT, which still does not exist in the country, and will handle pay per view TV (catching up on series episodes, other types of content) by accessing the internet through the TV set, and will offer users the possibility of consuming multimedia content (photos, music, videos) stored on any device connected to their home Wi-Fi network.
