Vodafone has been ordered to halt its activities in Cameroon due to an invalid licence, reports news agency APS. The regulator ART announced the decision taken by the telecom minister. For the past week, Vodafone customers have already been experiencing disruptions to the mobile services.
Vodafone's operations in the country are part of a cooperation with the operator Afrimax. According to the report, Afrimax's licence is invalid, as it was acquired only by absorbing the company Northwave. Under the terms of licences in Cameroon, the rights cannot be ceded to another party.
Vodafone and Afrimax came under fire last year already for launching services without a direct licence. This means the companies avoided the fees paid by other operators for licences and spectrum rights and also allows them to avoid obligations to cover the entire country with 4G services.
