VodafoneZiggo mobile customers reduce mobile data use in Q1

Thursday 16 May 2019 | 10:37 CET | News

VodafoneZiggo mobile customers started using less mobile data in the first quarter of this year, as compared to the fourth quarter of 2018, according to Vodafone Group quarterly figures. The use of mobile data amounted to 28,600 Terabytes in Q1, 5 percent less than Q4, but 21 percent more than in the first quarter of last year, when 23,700 TB was recorded.

The average data usage per customer per month grew to 1.9 GB in Q1 from 1.6 GB the year earlier. At the end of last year, data use averaged 2.2 GB per customer. The Vodafone Group reports its quarterly figures differently from VodafoneZiggo, which did not mention this figure during its latest report. A spokesperson for VodafoneZiggo confirmed to Telecompaper that data usage has fallen and gave three explanations.

First, the quarter is two days shorter, because February has 28 days. Furthermore, data usage among prepaid customers is declining. Finally, it appears that the data consumption of tablets is declining. A possible explanation is the increasing use of Wi-Fi (spots).

VodafoneZiggo's mobile ARPU declines in Q1

The Vodafone Group also reported a lower blended ARPU for VodafoneZiggo, at EUR 18.5 for the quarter against 19.8 in Q4. Unlike VodafoneZiggo, Vodafone Group gives its mobile postpaid and prepaid ARPU in a more precise way: EUR 21.3 and EUR 2.8 respectively. VodafoneZiggo rounds this off to EUR 21 and EUR 3.

The other figures that Vodafone Group provides for VodafoneZiggo are the same as in VodafoneZiggo's quarterly report: 4.96 million mobile customers, including 85.8 percent for postpaid, 3.32 million for broadband, 3.89 million for TV, 2.45 million for fixed telephony and 1,096 million for fixed-mobile households.
