VodafoneZiggo provides 5G live streams during IBC 2020

VodafoneZiggo conducted a broadcasting pilot with 5G during the annual International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), held in Amsterdam on 11-15 September. The conference showcases electronic media and entertainment companies. This year, all of the live video streams ran successfully over the Vodafone network, the operator said.

Vodafone provided the video streams with its 5G network from three different locations in Amsterdam: the RAI conference hall, a boat and a drone in the air. The streams were sent through both 5G and 4G networks, using network slicing.

The technique makes it possible to divide one network connection into 'slices', so that it can provide different users with different bandwidths at the same time. The system guarantees capacity for critical applications, such as emergency services or controlling robots in a hospital. It also lends itself to new broadcast techniques.
