WeChat messages double on eve of new year
The number of messages sent through the mobile app WeChat doubled on 30 January, the eve of the Chinese New Year, Xinhua reports. In the peak minute, the number of messages carrying best wishes for the 'Year of the Horse' surged to 10 million, according to data released by Tencent, developer of WeChat. Last year, text messages sent on the eve through SMS services of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom totaled 13.3 billion, up 11 percent year on year. This year's figure has yet to be released.

China Unicom to launch 4G services on 18 March

China Unicom will introduce its 4G services on 18 March, following rivals China Telecom and China Mobile. Unicom's TD-LTE services will initially launch in 25 cities across China and will expanded to 100 cities by the end of this year, the Shanghai Daily reports. The operator, which has earmarked CNY 10 billion for 4G investments this year, further plans to launch FDD-LTE services after the government issues licences for the standard.

Tencent invests in Dianping

Chinese internet company Tencent and local information services and group deal. provider Dianping have entered into investment and cooperation agreements. Under the agreements, the two companies will cooperate by integrating Dianping's content, user base, and offline merchant network with Tencent's social communications platforms, such as QQ and Weixin, to build an online-to-offline ecosystem. In addition, Tencent has invested in a 20 percent stake in Dianping.

SMS traffic down 43% over New Year in Hong Kong

The number of SMS sent in Hong Kong over the Chinese New Year fell by 43.0 percent compared to a year earlier to 6.572 million, the regulator OFCA reported. The number of SMS received was down 32.9 percent from 2013 to 13.435 million. The annual decline was less than the previous year, but still significant as more people used IP-based messaging systems.

WeChat launches investment product

Chinese internet company Tencent has launched an investment product on its WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging application. The Wealth (Licai Tong) offering is provided by China Asset Management and was made available in a limited release. China Unicom, Tencent launch WeChat Sim in more locations

China Unicom and internet firm Tencent have launched their Weixin Wo Sim card in Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shaanxi provinces, the Marbridge Daily writes citing a Sohu report. The two companies earlier launched the package, which includes discounted mobile data for Tencent's WeChat (Weixin) mobile messaging app, in Guangdong. The company has so far sold around 1.64 million Weixin Wo Sim cards in Guangdong.
