West Africa Cable System goes live in South Africa

The West Africa Cable System (WACS) has been commercially launched in South Africa. The system links Southern and Western Africa to Europe. The MTN Group said it invested more than USD100 million in new fibre optic cable to meet demand for fast, efficient broadband in Africa. The 17,200 kilometre fibre optic submarine cable system will raise South Africa's current broadband capacity by more than 500 Gbps. This will be a much-needed boost to MTN in South Africa, where consumer appetite for data quadrupled during 2011, with data consumption (excluding SMS) growing approximately 200 percent
