West Europe mobile prices trend lower in Q1
The cost of a mobile plan including a top smartphone showed a general decline in most countries in Western Europe in the first quarter of 2015, according to the latest research from Telecompaper. The survey of prices advertised in Q1 2015 in 16 countries showed prices trending lower in most countries compared to six months previously, both for plans including a high-end handset and for SIM-only plans. In total, more than 3,200 plans were on offer in Q1, about 18 percent less than during the previous survey in Q3 2014.

The research found that mobile plans are coming with ever-larger bundles. For example, around 36 percent of all SIM-only plans had 1,000+ or unlimited months each month, up from 27 percent in Q3 2014. Data bundles are growing as well, especially in Austria, Denmark, Germany, France and Ireland, where there was a strong increase in plans with more than 2GB of monthly data. Across all 16 countries, 34 percent of the SIM-only plans had more than 2GB. The share of plans with less than 1GB of data per month is decreasing gradually, reaching 38 percent of SIM-only plans in the latest period.

Scandinavia, Austria, France and the UK remained cheapest for mobile communications compared to the other countries surveyed, and Greece and Portugal still had the most expensive prices. Belgium and Switzerland became more expensive, while the Netherlands dropped in price and now ranks among the cheaper countries.

The semi-annual report compares the total cost of ownership for postpaid plans, with or without handset, plus any connection fees, promotions or other costs of a contract. Overall, median TCO prices went down compared to six months ago, both for plans including a high-end handset and in several countries for SIM-only plans. The drop in prices for plans with a top smartphone was due in part to the phone chosen, the Samsung Galaxy S5, which was starting to drop in price by Q1 2015.

EU Mobile Benchmark 2015 Q1

This EU Mobile Benchmark report compares and analyses over 3,200 mobile packages across 16 countries European countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and UK). A matrix was built based on ranges of monthly minutes and MBs offered. SMS has been excluded, as the majority of plans already offered (near) unlimited SMS. To account for more than just the headline cost of minutes and megabytes a total cost of ownership (TCO) approach has been used, which amongst others includes promotions and the cost of handsets. All MNOs, second brands where relevant and two MVNOs who acquired spectrum were included. Data was collected during Januari and February 2015 from the providers' websites. The team has assumed an 'average' consumer who is looking for a post-paid plan with either a handset in three categories or alternatively for a SIM-only plan. The report is accompanied for corporate users by the excel covering all the packages used in the analysis with the following details: name provider, name plan, type of plan, contract duration, which handset included, monthly price, promotional price, duration of promotion, calculated TCO in EUR and EUR PPP, set-up costs, cost of handset, number of minutes, SMS and MBs included. This report edition provides data and analysis of the high-end smartphone and SIM-only choices, while details of all four handset choices are included in the pricing database.
